We've completed our summer driving event! It exceeded all our
expectations.
The big question now is 'when can we do it again?'.
The day started out cool and cloudy as we began defensive driving
exercises
under the guidance of Frank and Mary Alice Cozza from the national
MBCA. By
the time we were into it, even the weather cooperated as the sun
came out
and provided a beautiful day. Participants from all over the state,
and
several from the Chicago area, enjoyed excercising their cars and
their
capabilities in the safety of a Miller Park lot while the SCCA
was holding
an autocross in the next lot over.
After lunch we did our own autocross, a kind of graduation from
defensive
driving. 42 entrants sped around a course marked by traffic cones
to see
who could get through quickest. There were bragging rights for
6 classes.
Cars ran the gamut from Grant Stanfield's 1961 220SEb to Jim and
Dianna
Quinn's ML500.
Steve Jones had the fastest run
at 45.000 seconds – in a BMW, and Nils Crough had the fastest
Mercedes run at 47.080 in his SLK230. The full results are listed
below.
